Having to do battle with the No. 3 team in the state of Indiana in Class 2A, the Madison-Grant Argylls’ 2019 season reached its conclusion on Thursday evening, as the Tipton Blue Devils won the Sectional 39 championship by a score of 8-0.
The Argylls were unable to solve Tipton’s Claire Norred, who allowed just three hits and struck out nine.
“Going in, we knew without a doubt that he had to play that perfect game,” Madison-Grant Head Coach Danny Justus said. “We had to have some good fortune. It was just one of those nights where they kind of nickeled and dimed us. But at the end of the night, it wasn’t really about defense [because] we couldn’t score runs. And we did have our chances – we just couldn’t get that hit.”
The Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back, adding one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth for the eight-run triumph.
Ellie Alcala, Mikenzy Stanley, and Zoey Barnett came away with three Argyll hits.
Alcala and Stanley each played in their final games as Argylls, and Justus thanked them for all of their contributions to the team’s success over the last four years.
“We talked about the journey,” Justus said. “After a game like this, we needed to put it behind us and look at all the good things going forward. They’re both going to attend college. They’re both going to work on a degree. They’re both going to stay active in the community. From here on out, we want to know and be a part of that life with them. At the end of the day, that ball game was never as important as those kids and how we’ve grown together.”
Madison-Grant finishes the season with a 14-11 record.
