Despite another strong performance from senior Mason Degenkolb last Tuesday night, the Taylor Trojans’ home struggles continued as they were defeated by the Grace College Lancers 81-70.
Taylor opened the contest just one-of-10 from the perimeter, but they battled through that shooting slump to draw even with Grace at 25-25. Following that, the Trojans knocked down three of six three-point attempts, highlighting a 13-4 run that gave Taylor a 38-29 lead.
Defensively, the Trojans held the Lancers to just 37.9 percent shooting in the first half while out rebounding them by 10.
But Grace found their footing in the second half, scoring the first eight points out of intermission and using three straight triples to take a 57-50 lead.
A Kegan Owen triple and a three-point play from Ryan Robinson cut Grace’s lead to one point, but a 16-6 run by the Lancers put the game out of reach.
In the final 20 minutes, the Lancers shot 57.7 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc.
With the loss, the Trojans fell to 1-4 at Odle Arena, shooting just 40.9 percent.
Ryan Robinson led the Trojans’ offense with 14 points, while Degenkolb finished with 13, giving him 1,502 for his career. CJ Penha collected his sixth double-double of the season, posting 12 points and 13 rebounds.
