After a first round bye, the Marion Giants won a thriller on Thursday night in the Sectional 23 semifinal, advancing to the championship game with a 2-1 triumph over the Heritage Patriots via penalty kicks.
The first half came and went without either team scoring a goal. Larielle Cox finally broke the scoreless tie with 28 minutes to play, one-timing a deflection off Patriots’ goalkeeper Stephanie Frecker’s hands to give the Giants a 1-0 lead, but Heritage recorded the equalizer just 10 minutes later.
After two extra sessions failed to produce any more goals, the Giants went to work in the penalty kicks session. Taylor Kitts and Ellie Vermilion converted their chances, and after Marion goalkeeper Olivia Lindsay made two big stops, Morgan Hartman clinched the victory.
