In their Sectional 7 opener on Tuesday evening, the Marion Giants began their playoff run with a rout, taking a double-digit lead early and never relinquishing it in an 81-57 triumph over the McCutcheon Mavericks.
Marion took control of the contest early, outscoring the Mavericks 26-9 in the opening eight minutes. JK Thomas scored 17 of Marion’s point, shooting five-of-six from beyond the arc.
McCutcheon cut the Giants’ lead to six in the second quarter, but Marion ended the first half on a 10-0 to take a 35-22 lead into the halftime break.
The Mavericks were unable to put together any sort of comeback effort in the second half. Marion increased their advantage to 62-35 after the third quarter before cruising to the 24-point triumph.
“We played outstanding defense,” Marion Assistant Head Coach Herb McPherson said. “We contained [Dra Gibbs] Lawhorn, their outstanding freshman player, controlled the boards, and JK played a great game. We just played outstanding team defense, and we shut them down. It was just an outstanding game for us.”
Thomas finished the game with 37 points, while sophomore Rasheed Jones collected 18 points for Marion in the victory.
