In their first game of the New Year on Friday night, the Oak Hill Golden Eagles’ offensive struggles continued as they were defeated by the Western Panthers 36-31.
While the game was close throughout due to Golden Eagles’ defensive play, the Golden Eagles, as has been the case in many of their losses this season, had trouble putting the ball in the basket.
Despite the defeat, however, Oak Hill Head Coach Kevin Renbarger believes his team is taking positive steps forward, particularly on the defensive end of the floor.
“Even though the score doesn’t look like a lot of fun it was a good game,” Renbarger said. “It was one of our first adventures into the waters of typical 3A basketball. The game was very physical, very disciplined and hard fought. We made just a few too many mistakes offensively. We struggled to finish and score. We hit just one three point shot all night and several shots around the basket that didn’t fall.
“[But] if we continue to progress defensively as we did between this game and Madison-Grant we are going to be in every game we play.”
Oak Hill returns to action this coming weekend, taking on Peru and Eastern in a back-to-back, two-game road trip.
“Peru is another tough 3A challenge,” Renbarger said. “Peru is very tough, very physical, very disciplined and exceptionally well coached. I have a lot of respect for Coach Thompson and what his teams do. They are 7-1 and likely going to be 8-1 by the time we play them. They will not beat themselves and would be a great challenge for our kids at Peru which is a tough place to play. Eastern is 5-4 and will present the same kind of basketball as well. I am excited for the challenge.”
