Marion earns a pair of 6-0 victories over NCC rivals Kokomo and Muncie Central

Coming off a game against an incredibly talented Carroll team in which head coach, Bre Laypoole, was pleased with the effort despite the outcome, the Marion Giants put together one of their best efforts of the young season in a 6-0 win over NCC rival Kokomo.

Just as they did against Carroll, the Giants had a great warmup session before the game started, which helped them to lock in and focus right away.

Once Taylor Kitts scored in the opening minutes of the game, the rout was on.

“They came out and warmed up better than they had been, which is good,” Laypoole said. “We scored in the first three minutes and that [locked us in.] Once that first goal was in, they were like ‘Alright, let’s do this.’ You could tell the girls were having fun tonight.”

Six different players scored for the Giants to help them achieve their second win of the season, including Taylor Kitts, Sophia Kitts, Claire Hendricks, Breanne Jones, Kaylynn Scher, and Ellie Vermillion.

Marion achieved their second straight 6-0 victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating long-time rival Muncie Central due in large part to the team’s offensive strategy.

“The girls did great, especially in the second half,” Laypoole said. “We worked on a three-touch system that works on getting them the ball quicker, and they looked so much better.”

Hendricks and Scher helped to pace the Giants offensively, but it was the defense that caught Laypoole’s eye in the win over the Bearcats.

“I have to give credit to my defense,” Laypoole said. “They constantly work hard, and they are continuing to build back there.”

Scher played an incredible game for the Giants, finishing with two goals and three assists, while Pootie Jones also had two goals. Taylor Kitts and Morgan Hartman rounded out the scoring for Marion.
