Oak Hill increases win streak to five, defeats Elwood for second conference victory

On Friday night, the Oak Hill Golden Eagles continued to roll, winning their fifth straight contest and their second conference game in a 49-20 triumph over the Elwood Panthers.

With their offense beginning to trend in the right direction, Oak Hill played some of their best defense of the young season against the Panthers. The Golden Eagles held Elwood to just seven points in the first two quarters, and for the game, the Panthers shot just eight-of-43 (18 percent) from the floor.

“I think our team is starting to buy into the defensive end,” Oak Hill Head Coach Todd Law said. “For us to be successful, we are going to need to be really good on that end. In the last three games, we’ve taken some small steps forward on that end.”

The Golden Eagles came out firing, scoring 14 points in each of the first two quarters to take a commanding 28-7 lead.

A 15-point third helped the Golden Eagles increase their advantage to 43-14 before cruising to their 29-point victory.

For the game, Oak Hill shot 18-of-43 from the field (41 percent) and were excellent once again from the perimeter, shooting five-of-10 (50 percent).

“The kid came out really focused,” Law said. “They played really well for the first three and a half quarters. I was really pleased with that. It’s really encouraging to see our kids shoot the three as well as we are. Three out of our last four games, we’ve hit five or more, and that’s excellent. I think we’ve been 50 percent in all of those games as well. That’s been encouraging.”

Oak Hill also dominated the glass, outrebounding Elwood by a mark of 39-22, 14 of which came on the offensive glass.

Abby Shaw led the Golden Eagles in scoring on Friday, finishing with 14 points, which included a perfect four-for-four from the perimeter.

“Abby’s play has been coming,” Law said. “She is getting more aggressive offensively not just shooting the three, but she is taking the ball to the basket a lot better in the last couple of games.”

Taylor Westgate collected 10 points and nine rebounds, while Kate Hornocker added nine points and eight boards in the Golden Eagles’ triumph.

“[We saw] lots of encouraging things,” Law said. “Kids are continuing to get more confidence, and that’s going to help us.”
