Taylor baseball earns upset win over No. 10 Keiser

The Taylor Trojans downed No. 10 Keiser University on Tuesday afternoon in an early-season upset, plating five runs in the opening inning on their way to an 8-4 victory.

Seven-straight batters reached base safely in the first inning, as an error, an interference call, a walk and four straight singles from Nathan Targgart, Wyatt Whitman, Sam Wiese, and Christian McGill gave the Trojans a 5-0 lead.

Targgart scored Tanner Watson with an RBI single in the fourth, and after Keiser scored two runs of their own in the fifth, the Trojans scored two more runs in the sixth to increase their lead to 8-2.

Keiser scored runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but the Trojans five-run first inning was too much for the Seahawks to overcome.

Clay Riggins (1-0) earned the win after tossing two scoreless frames. Riggins, Drake Gongwer, Trevor Booth, Rob Fox, Mitch Ubelhor, Brenden Bube, Brett Lawson, and Justin Pettit yielded just three earned run while striking out eight.

Targgart had four of Taylor’s 12 hits, adding a run and an RBI, while McGill finished with two singles. Whitman had two RBI, while Andrew Kennedy scored a run and recorded one RBI in the victory.
