Taylor baseball splits weekend series with Campbellsville

The Taylor Trojans split their weekend series with Campbellsville University on Friday afternoon, defeating the Tigers in the first game, 7-3, before dropping the second game, 6-2.

With their win in the first contest, the Trojans now have two victories over nationally-ranked squads in their first eight games.

Matt Patton (2-0) earned the victory in game one, tossing seven innings of two-run ball. The senior allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out five.

The Taylor offense provided support for Patton by scoring three times in the fifth inning. After Austin Mettica hit a single, Josh Lane brought him home with an RBI double before scoring on a Campbellsville error. Nathan Targgart capped the scoring with an RBI of his own later in the frame.

The Trojans tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-0 lead.

Campbellsville scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, but Andrew Kennedy and Rob Fox shut the Tigers down the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Mettica, Brett Lawson, Lane, and Tanner Kolbe combined for seven hits, three walks and four RBI. Mettica went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Lawson recorded two hits and two RBI. Lane also scored a run and had one RBI, while Kolbe collected two hits in the game one victory.

Game two went to Campbellsville, who built a 6-0 lead after four innings of play. Drake Gongwer, Clay Riggins, Kole Barkhaus, and Mitch Ubelhor kept the Tigers off the board for the rest of the game, but the Trojans could not rally in the 6-2 loss.

The Trojans collected just five hits, as Andrew Kennedy doubled and Targgart scored one run.
