Taylor softball begins 2018 season with doubleheader sweep of Union College

The Taylor University softball team began the 2018 season with a doubleheader sweep, as they defeated the Union College Bulldogs 10-1 in game one and 7-2 in game two on Friday afternoon.

In the first game, the Trojans had a slim 2-1 lead entering the sixth inning, but Hannah Castor’s solo home run in the frame was the first of eight-straight runs to give Taylor the nine-run victory.

Darby Shaw (1-0) went the distance in her Taylor debut, allowing just one run and five hits.

In game two, the Trojans scored three runs each in the third and fourth innings before tacking on an insurance run in the seventh. Union scored the final two runs of the contest but never threatened the Trojans’ lead.

Lauren Kanai (1-0) also won her Taylor debut, pitching a complete game while allowing just two runs on five hits.

Castor finished 5-for-8 in the two-game series, recording a double, a home run, three runs scored, and three RBI. Taylor Wilson also finished 5-for-8 from the dish with a home run, three runs scored, and three RBI. Courtney Moriarty went 4-for-7 with a double and two RBI in the Trojans’ doubleheader sweep.
