Trojans baseball records second sweep of Cornerstone

For the second time in nine days, the Taylor Trojans swept the Cornerstone University Eagles, coming away with a 6-5 victory in game one and a 3-1 triumph in the second contest on Thursday evening.

Taylor’s offense was efficient in the first three innings of game one, knocking in six runs. Ben Kalbuagh started the scoring in the second inning with a two-run double, and a few Cornerstone errors helped the Trojans increase their advantage to 4-0 heading into the third frame.

The Eagles were able to get a run back in the top half of the third, but the Trojans responded with two more runs. Nick Rusche recorded a sacrifice fly, and a score off a wild pitch made it a 6-1 ball game heading into the fourth inning.

Cornerstone scored four times over the final four innings to cut Taylor’s lead to one run, but Mitch Ubelhor shut the door to earn his second save of the season. Clay Riggins (3-0) earned his third win in as many appearances.

Luke Shively was excellent on the mound in game two, striking out four while not allowing a hit, while Luke Carlson (1-0) recorded five punchouts in two innings of work.

The Trojans plated two runs in the first inning and one in the seventh, but the Eagles loaded the bases with just one out in the eighth. However, the Taylor bullpen escaped the jam, as Cy Stanley ended the inning without giving up a run. The freshman earned his first career save in the nightcap with two strikeouts.

Rusche finished the day three-for-six at the plate while adding two RBI and two runs scored.
