After dropping their season-opening contest to Saint Xavier University last Monday, the IWU Wildcats dropped their second game of the season last Tuesday afternoon, falling to the No. 22 IU Southeast Grenadiers by a score of 5-2.
IU Southeast scored all of their runs in the first five innings, building a 5-0 lead, and the Wildcats were unable to complete the comeback. IWU did push two runs across in the seventh innings, but that was as close as they would get. Jordan Wharton scored Chris Lopez on an RBI single, while Nick Coy batted in Blake Storr on a fielder’s choice.
In the final three innings, IWU’s pitching held the Grenadiers in check, allowing just one hit. Max Engstrom and Austin Swift combined to pitch eight innings, recording nine strikeouts in the process.
“We showed growth today,” IWU Head Coach Rich Benjamin said. “Max is going to be a great pitcher in our program and Austin was electric striking out seven of 14 batters faced. We defended well and our hitters put together quality at-bats. We were one swing away.”
