On Saturday, the IWU Wildcats opened up league play with a pair of wins, defeating Saint Francis 10-1 in game one and 14-9 in game two.
In the first contest, Austin Swift and Tanner Killian combined for a five-hit, one-run performance, striking out seven Cougars in the process. Caleb Brenczweski went 2-for-4 from the dish with two RBI and two runs scored, while Nick Coy launched a two-run home run for his first of the season.
The Wildcats led from the outset in game one, scoring eight runs in the top of the third on their way to a nine-run triumph.
After falling behind 6-1 in the second contest, the Wildcats scored seven unanswered runs to take a two-run lead in the fourth inning. Saint Francis evened up the score with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Wildcats regained the lead for good in the sixth before adding four insurance runs in the ninth.
Tanner Killian went 3-for-5 with a triple, a grand slam, four RBI, and two runs scored, while Tye Thixton went 2-for-6 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored.
