Wildcats score 20 runs in doubleheader sweep of Bethel

After a 15-5 triumph over Bethel on Friday evening, the IWU Wildcats kept up their high-scoring ways on Saturday, defeating the Pilots 10-2 and 10-7 in a two-game series.

With the victories, the Wildcats increased their winning streak to seven games, and now trail second place Mount Vernon Nazarene University by one game in the Crossroads League standings.

Conner Cantrell pitched well in the opener, allowing just two runs on five hits in a complete game effort.

Offensively, the Wildcats continued to score in bunches, plating at least one run in four of their six innings. Lucas Goodwin hit a home run, while Parker Johnson and Nick Coy each recorded doubles. Ethan English, Caleb Eder, and Tye Thixton each had two RBI, while Johnson scored three times.

In the nightcap, the score was tied at 2-2 after the second inning, but the Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom half of the third frame to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Eight Wildcats combined for 11 hits in the second contest. The bottom third of the order – Goodin, Steven Busby, and Coy – went a combined 5-for-11 with a home run, a double, four RBI, and three runs scored.

Zee Breytenbach earned the win in relief, allowing just one unearned run in 2.1 innings, while Tanner Killian shut the door in the ninth frame, securing his fourth save of the season.
