Wildcats sweep Asbury to open 2020 campaign

In their season-opening doubleheader on Monday afternoon, the No. 12 IWU Wildcats came out swinging, scoring a combined 21 runs in 6-2 and 15-5 triumphs over Asbury University.

In the opener, Jennifer Yost opened the scoring for the Wildcats on an Asbury error in the third inning. IWU added to their lead in the fourth frame, taking a 4-0 lead they would not relinquish.

Miranda Wehrle, after a strong freshman campaign, got off to a fast start in her second season, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Former Eastbrook standout Mady McMillan went the distance for the Wildcats in her first collegiate start, allowing just five hits and two earned runs in her debut.

In the nightcap, IWU took another early lead on an Asbury error, and senior Sydney Williams helped put the game away with a two-run home run in the top of the second frame. For the game, Williams went 3-for-4 with five RBI.

Addie Benham tossed a complete game, earning the win, while also recording three RBI.

Rebecca Schard also homered in IWU’s run-rule triumph, finishing the contest with three runs batted in.
