Big fourth quarter vaults Marion to first place in North Central Conference

When it comes to basketball in the state of Indiana, coaches are always looking for their teams to be playing at their highest level once the calendar turns to February.

For the Marion Giants, they have been on a roll since late December, and another impressive win on Friday evening puts them in the drivers’ seat for a conference championship.

Leading just 37-36 at the end of three quarters, the Giants’ offense exploded in the final frame, using a 28-2 run to blow the game wide open and eventually come away with a 64-44 triumph over the McCutcheon Mavericks.

With the win, the Giants improved to first place in the NCC with a 6-2 conference record.

On a night where Jalen Blackmon was held in check, scoring just 13 points, JK Thomas more than made up for it. The Giants’ shooting guard finished with 26 points, his most since returning to the Marion lineup.

Dre Aguilar added eight points, Rasheed Jones seven, and Quran Howard in the Giants’ victory.
